Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have signed the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) project.
The agreement, signed during the ECOWAS Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, marks a key step towards implementing the regional gas pipeline initiative, according to a statement by NNPC Ltd.
The pipeline, projected to span about 6,900 kilometres with a capacity of 30 billion cubic metres annually, will link West Africa to Morocco and Europe while integrating regional energy markets.
NNPC Ltd. and Morocco’s ONHYM are jointly developing the project, which is backed by Nigeria, Morocco, ECOWAS member states, and Mauritania.
NNPC’s Group CEO, Bashir Ojulari, described the agreement as a major move from planning to execution, while ONHYM Director-General Amina Benkhadra said it reflects strong regional cooperation.
The project is expected to boost gas supply, support power generation, drive industrial growth, and create jobs across the region.
