Tinubu names Kunle Elebute as FRCN board chairman

Former KPMG Nigeria CEO brings four decades of audit and governance experience to Nigeria's financial reporting regulator

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mr. Kunle Elebute as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) in a move aimed at strengthening corporate governance standards and boosting investor confidence in Nigeria’s financial reporting framework.

The appointment was announced on June 18, 2026, and forms part of the federal government’s broader effort to align Nigeria’s financial reporting standards with global best practices amid ongoing economic reforms.

Elebute brings over four decades of professional experience spanning accounting, auditing, financial advisory, and corporate governance. He previously served as Senior Partner and Chief Executive Officer of KPMG Nigeria and held regional leadership roles as Chairman of KPMG West Africa and Chairman of KPMG Africa, positions that placed him at the centre of the continent’s audit and advisory landscape.

The Presidency said his extensive background would support ongoing reforms at the FRCN, the regulatory body responsible for setting, monitoring, and enforcing accounting, auditing, actuarial, and corporate governance standards across Nigeria.

Analysts expect the appointment to signal renewed commitment to transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s financial system, areas that have drawn scrutiny from international investors and multilateral institutions in recent years.

The FRCN plays a central role in shaping the integrity of financial information available to investors, creditors, and regulators, making the calibre of its leadership a closely watched indicator of the country’s reform momentum.

With Elebute at the helm of the governing board, stakeholders anticipate a sharper focus on closing gaps between domestic reporting practices and international standards, a step seen as critical to deepening Nigeria’s capital markets and attracting long-term foreign investment.
