Women Rise: Africa’s Growth Engine

Colloquium Highlights Women Entrepreneurs as Key to Post-Pandemic Economic Recovery

Women entrepreneurs are vital agents for economic growth, driving innovation, job creation, and wealth generation in developing countries.
This assertion was made at the 2025 Pre-5th Colloquium tagged “Peace Africa” held in Abua, by participants from across various sectors.
The colloquim focused on unlocking the transformative potential of women in business and governance, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking, Dr Jophia Gupar, Founder of the Pan-African Young Women Development Initiatives, said the colloquium was conceived in response to the economic setbacks women endured during the pandemic.
“Women’s businesses were shattered during the pandemic. It became clear we needed to regroup and reimagine our economic potential,” she said.
Gupar lamented the systemic financial barriers limiting women’s political participation despite their proven resilience in business.
“The life of a woman is a battle. Any progress she makes is often fought by those closest to her. Unity and economic power are non-negotiable,” she said.
Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to uplift women, particularly at the grassroots level.
Ibrahim-Sulieman, who was represented by Mrs Enifolami Ola, her Special Adviser, commended the organisers and pledged government support in women economic and political empowerment.
Also, Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, in her goodwill message, encouraged women to reject limiting societal stereotypes and build strong self-esteem.
“We must think highly of ourselves beyond any opinion, especially from men. I remain a committed pillar to women’s development,” she said.
Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), represented by Mrs Bassey Ita-Ikpang, FCT Chairperson, hailed the timing of the event.
“When women drive innovation, they generate jobs and build resilient communities. The outcome is always positive economic transformation,” she said.
Also, Grace Ike, Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, while applauding the organisers for creating a platform that embodies women supporting women, credited her success to financial empowerment.
“Economic empowerment was my fuel. Without it, I wouldn’t have made history,” she said.
The event concluded with a call for unified action towards strengthening the role of women in rebuilding Africa’s economies and ensuring lasting peace and prosperity.
Other highlights include: exhibition of African products and services; presentations showcasing women-led enterprises and discussions on exploring entrepreneurship, innovation, and gender equity. (NAN)
