BPP boss urges civil servants to plan for life after retirement

Dr Adebowale Adedokun, Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), has urged civil servants to prepare early for life after retirement by acquiring relevant skills and developing sustainable business plans.

Adedokun made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 114th Anniversary Symposium of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) in Abuja.

The symposium, themed “Mitigating the Impact of Security Challenges on the Working Class,” focused on the resilience and safety of Nigerian workers amid economic and security challenges.

The BPP boss advised public servants to embrace innovation while upholding integrity, professionalism, accountability and patriotism in the discharge of their duties.

He described the civil service as critical to implementing government policies, noting that effective public servants were essential to translating government programmes into tangible outcomes for citizens.

Adedokun also highlighted ongoing procurement reforms, saying public procurement had become an important tool for economic growth, industrial development, job creation and social inclusion.

He identified the Nigeria First Policy, affirmative procurement, food procurement reforms, e-procurement, professionalisation of the procurement cadre and continuous capacity building as key areas of reform.

According to him, the Nigeria First Policy is aimed at promoting local content, supporting Nigerian businesses, expanding industrial capacity and creating jobs through government procurement.

He said affirmative procurement would expand access to public contracts for women-owned businesses, youth-led enterprises, persons with disabilities and community-based enterprises.

Adedokun added that the BPP was digitising procurement processes to reduce human interface, minimise opportunities for corruption, accelerate transactions and improve audit trails.

He said the reforms would also create opportunities for retired civil servants to engage in businesses after leaving active service.

The NCSU conferred its PRIDE Award on Adedokun in recognition of his commitment to national service.

The symposium was attended by labour leaders, senior government officials and public-sector stakeholders.
