Championing Quality Journalism: Kwara NUJ Chairman Abdullateef Ahmed Speaks
Ilorin Commerce Chronicle debuts as NUJ leader emphasizes unity, training, and journalist welfare

The Press is the fourth estate of the realm, making it a duty to promote the standard of journalism and dissemination of quality information. On this ground, ICC airs the opinion of the number one journalist in the state, Abdullateef Ahmed the Kwara NUJ chairman as Ilorin Commerce Chronicle makes its debut in journalism.
Reflecting on his early years, Ahmed recounted his deep-seated passion for journalism. “From a young age, I was captivated by the power of storytelling and the impact it could have on society,” he said. This fervour led him to pursue formal education in journalism, culminating in a career that has spanned over 15 years.
Since assuming the role of Chairman, Ahmed has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the Kwara State Council. One of the notable achievements was the reopening of the NUJ Press Centre Chalet, which had been closed for three years due to legal challenges. “We prioritized settling the legal issues to provide journalists with a conducive environment for their activities,” Ahmed explained.
Under Ahmed’s stewardship, the council has placed significant emphasis on the training and retraining of journalists. “In an ever-evolving media landscape, continuous learning is essential. We’ve organized workshops and seminars to equip our members with modern journalism skills,” he noted.
Ahmed has been a vocal advocate for unity within the union. Following a recent council election, he urged members to reconcile differences and work collaboratively. “Our strength lies in our unity. Together, we can achieve more and uphold the integrity of our profession,” he emphasized.
Additionally, the welfare of journalists has been a cornerstone of his administration. Initiatives such as health insurance schemes have been introduced to ensure members’ well-being. “A journalist’s health is as important as the news they report. We must take care of our own,” Ahmed stated.
Ahmed’s leadership has not gone unnoticed. Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, a counterpart from Ogun State, commended his professionalism and the strides made by the Kwara NUJ under his tenure. “Ahmed’s approach serves as a model for other states. His dedication is truly commendable,” Olanrewaju remarked.
Expressing his support for the Ilorin Commerce Chronicle, Ahmed highlighted the importance of diverse media voices in the region. “The Chronicle’s focus on business and commerce is a valuable addition to our media landscape. It offers readers insights into the economic pulse of our community,” he said.
Looking ahead, Ahmed envisions a more robust and united NUJ in Kwara State. “We aim to foster an environment where journalists can thrive, adapt to new challenges, and continue to serve the public with integrity,” he concluded.
