Kwara Govt. Calls for Intensified Campaign Against Drug Abuse

Commissioner of Health urges Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) to collaborate on combating drug abuse and AMR.

The Kwara Government has urged the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) to intensify campaign against drug abuse in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, made the call in Ilorin while receiving the state leadership of the society on Friday.

She observed with dismay the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) due to the indiscriminate use of drugs.

El-Imam explained that antimicrobial resistance occurs when infections become harder to treat.

“Micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites evolve, becoming resistant to drugs and developing the ability to survive treatments,” she said.

The Commissioner described AMR as one of the top global public health threats facing humanity, adding that all hands must be on deck to combat the cankerworm.

She also advised the group  to intensify fights against the abuse of drugs, both fake and expired drugs.

El-Imam commended PSN for its support to the state government, while calling for collaboration in ensuring the circulation of expired drugs is curbed.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Abdulmalik Mohammed, the Kwara PSN Chairman, commended the state government for providing drugs across healthcare facilities in the state.

He also assured the government of the group’s readiness to support government on quality healthcare in Kwara.
