The Brand Loyalty Test: Is Your Brand Passing It?

Customers don't leave because you stopped delivering the result, they leave because your experience around that result became replicable. Result is commodity; experience is the moat.

The Brand Loyalty Test: Is Your Brand Passing It?

A walk down any street around Tanke or Fate and you’re likely to find a bukka with a queue, a barber with a six-month waiting list, and a boutique that somehow always has “just one more” customer than the shop next door.

But ask yourself the brutal question: if you own a business here, are you that spot? Or are you the one your customers visit only when their first choice is fully booked?

That’s the real test of brand loyalty. It’s not how many customers you have today, but how many would still choose you if another brand opened tomorrow.

This is the kicker. Human needs don’t run out. They keep growing like a to-do-list. Your customer will always want to eat, always want a haircut, always want to look good for that owambe. You will never “satisfy” that need once and be done. Which means the real question isn’t whether you can meet the need because anyone can.

The better positioning is whether you’re still the one they come to, months and years from now, when everyone else can meet it too.

So put yourself in your customer’s shoes and ask three questions about your own business.

The 3 Brand Loyalty Test

Question 1: What’s the Glue?

If a customer had to explain, in one sentence, why they choose you over the five other options on the same street, what would they say? Is it your prices? Your speed? Your packaging? The fact that you remember their name and their usual order?

Whatever it is…that’s your glue. If you can’t answer this clearly, neither can they, and that’s a problem, because brand loyalty needs something to hold onto. A shapeless “we’re just good” doesn’t survive competition.

Question 2: How Long Has that Glue Held?

This is where a lot of business owners get uncomfortable. If your best customers have only been coming for two weeks, that’s not brand loyalty yet, that’s curiosity. Two weeks of consistently coming back doesn’t pass for a brand loyalty test.

If they’ve been coming for two years, through price increases, through a slow month, through you running out of their favourite item once or twice, that’s a brand loyalty test you can actually bank on. Time is the only thing that tells you if what you’re offering is trusted or just trending.

Question 3: Can Someone Else Copy the Experience?

This is the one that matters most, and it’s the one most Ilorin business owners tend to get wrong. If you sell suya, you are not the only person who can sell someone hot, well-seasoned meat on a stick. That’s the result, and results are copyable.

What’s harder to copy is the experience around it, i.e,  how you serve it, how long they wait, how you make them feel while they wait, whether you remember they don’t like too much onion. If another spot can replicate your result and your experience, your customers will leave the moment that spot is more convenient. If they can only copy your result, you still have a chance to keep them but only if your experience stays sharp.

Conclusion: Lekki Brand Loyalty Test

Now, here’s the thing about all three questions: they’re not one-time answers. A customer’s glue can weaken. Two years of loyalty can be undone by one bad month of service. And your experience can be copied the moment you get comfortable and stop refining it. That’s why staying ahead of your customer, not just meeting them where they are, is the actual work of building your brand loyalty in Ilorin’s competitive market.

So run the test on your own business this week. Ask what your glue is. Ask how long it’s actually held. Also, ask whether your experience, not just your product, could be copied by the shop three doors down. Your answers will tell you whether your brand loyalty is something you’ve built, or something you’ve simply been lucky to still have.
