Youth Unemployment: A Drag on Nigeria’s Economic Growth
Legal Expert Warns of Instability and Urges Investment in Youth Empowerment

Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Jamiu Aliyu, has warned that unemployed youths pose a significant threat to national stability and economic growth. Aliyu, who said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, said that managing jobless youths was challenging for any society.
According to him, they are more susceptible to manipulation and criminal activities.
“When youths are jobless, they become vulnerable to being lured into dangerous and illegal activities.
“Leaders and society must recognize the risks associated with high youth unemployment and take proactive measures to address the issue,” he said.
According to Aliyu, unemployed youths contribute to social vices that jeopardize public safety and national security.
To mitigate this risk, he urged the government to create more job opportunities and invest in skill development programs to foster self-reliance among young people.
“The government must prioritize youth empowerment through skill acquisition programs, enabling them to be self-sufficient rather than dependent on elusive white-collar jobs,” he added.
He also encouraged Nigerian youths and graduates to embrace vocational training, develop entrepreneurial skills, and adopt a strong work ethic to secure their future. (NAN)
