Minister of Interior announces Wednesday and Thursday as work-free days as Nigeria joins the global Muslim community in observance

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026 as public holidays to mark the Eid-ul-Adha celebration, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced.

The declaration was communicated through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, who said the gesture reflects the Federal Government’s deep respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims participating in one of Islam’s most sacred observances.

The minister extended warm felicitations from the Federal Government to all Muslim faithful across Nigeria and in the diaspora, acknowledging the festival’s profound religious significance.

Eid-ul-Adha, the statement noted, is rooted in the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for fellow human beings, ideals the government described as central to the celebration’s meaning for Muslims worldwide.

The Federal Government used the occasion to call on all Nigerians, regardless of faith, to devote the period to prayer and sober reflection, seeking divine guidance for the nation as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity.

In closing, the government extended wishes for a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration to all Muslims, invoking the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the occasion represents.
