UN Security Council Condemns Kwara Attack, Demands Justice

Global body urges cooperation with Nigeria to prosecute perpetrators and sponsors

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Kwara State and called for the perpetrators and their sponsors to be identified and brought to justice.

In a statement issued in New York on Feb. 18, the Council described the attacks as “heinous and cowardly,” according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The attacks, which occurred on Feb. 3 in the Nuku and Woro communities, reportedly claimed more than 160 lives. In addition, scores of women and children were abducted, while several homes and properties were destroyed, worsening the humanitarian impact on affected communities.

Reacting to the incident, members of the Security Council stressed the urgent need to “hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.”

They also called on all countries to cooperate actively with the Nigerian government in line with international law and existing Security Council resolutions.

Furthermore, the Council reaffirmed that terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and global stability. It noted that such acts are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, location, or those responsible.

The Council also urged member states to strengthen efforts to combat terrorism in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other international legal frameworks. These include international human rights law, international refugee law, and humanitarian law designed to protect civilians and preserve global security.

In addition, members of the Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Nigeria. They also wished those injured a speedy recovery and called for the immediate and safe return of all abducted victims.

The Council reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria and other countries in confronting terrorism and restoring peace and security in affected regions.
