NRS Alerts Public to Fake Website Over False Vehicle Tax Claims
Agency Clarifies No New Vehicle Tax Policy Exists, Urges Nigerians to Use Official Channels
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has issued a public warning urging Nigerians to disregard claims circulating online about the introduction of a new vehicle tax, describing the source as a fraudulent website with no official backing.
The agency stated clearly that no such tax policy has been approved or announced and that the platform spreading the information is not affiliated with the NRS in any capacity. The warning comes amid growing concerns over the rise of fake government websites designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.
The NRS urged citizens to exercise caution when encountering tax-related information online, advising that any official policy or announcement would only be communicated through verified and authorised government channels. Residents were warned against making any payments or submitting personal information on platforms that cannot be confirmed as legitimate.
Digital fraud has become an increasingly pressing issue in Nigeria’s financial landscape, with scammers frequently exploiting the names and identities of government agencies to lend credibility to false claims.
Fake tax notices, in particular, pose a significant risk, as they can mislead citizens into transferring funds directly to fraudsters, resulting in financial losses and eroding public trust in government institutions.
The public is advised to cross-check all tax-related communications with the NRS directly through its official website and verified contact channels before taking any action.
